I’ve had a rare sacred Saturday morning today, undisturbed. No plans, partner at work, no children, no chores. Pure bliss. I’m transported back to the feeling of being 10 years old and wasting the day away by watching the VH1 Top 20 Countdown with religious fervor. The premise was simple: for nearly 20 years, every Saturday morning, VH1 would air 20 music videos in order of popularity that week. The order of the countdown was determined by record sales, yes, but also airtime on the radio, message board posts, and even people sending in mail. I could cry.
Since its last episode in 2015, nothing has quite filled the void. Loss of monoculture notwithstanding, I think the value and purpose of music videos has changed completely. The closest thing we have now to a formalized presentation of this content outside the realm of TikTok and Reels is Youtube’s VEVO channel. So I’m taking the plunge. The things I do for you!
